Everything You Wanted To Know About Laser Careers

Laser CareerFrom permanent hair removal to skin tightening and tattoo removal to the reduction of cellulite, lasers can do a lot to enhance a person’s appearance.

In recent years, the medical aesthetics industry has expanded by leaps and bounds as more people demand aesthetic services to enhance their looks and take years off their appearance.

Laser careers are both lucrative and stimulating. The field continues to change as new technological advances come onto the market, meaning there is always something new to learn!

Before you can begin a career in laser technology, you must complete an aesthetic laser course. Medical aesthetics schools across the country offer training programs for individuals looking to become a cosmetic laser technician.

Careers In Laser Technology

If you have a passion for helping others look and feel their best, a career as a cosmetic laser tech may be the perfect fit! Cosmetic laser technicians are skin care specialists who perform procedures such as laser hair removal, tattoo removal, skin tightening and other skin rejuvenation treatments.

The job duties of a laser tech include evaluating skin concerns, developing the best treatment plan and administering the desired cosmetic procedure. Part of the job consists of recommending products to address the skin care concerns of your clients as well as providing them tips on how to care for their skin.

Laser technicians can be found working for medical spas, physician’s offices, niche clinics and even fitness centers. They typically work 40-hour weeks; however, they may also work part-time with more flexible hours to provide treatments during hours when their clients have more free time, such as the evenings and weekends.

When it comes to skin resurfacing treatments, there are two types of lasers you will find yourself working with frequently. Ablative lasers work by delivering an intense wavelength of light to the skin. These types of lasers are used to reduce the signs of aging and treat skin concerns such as scarring from acne and skin lesions. By stimulating the skin’s healing properties, ablative lasers promote cellular regeneration and collagen production.

Non-ablative lasers, on the other hand, are less invasive. Instead of destroying the skin tissue in order to promote regrowth, non-ablative lasers heat the skin, which stimulates collagen production. Due to the less invasive nature of the procedure, patients typically require multiple sessions to see the results they desire.

Become A Cosmetic Laser Technician

Medical aesthetics training is essential for anyone who wants to offer cosmetic treatments like laser hair removal and begin a career in laser technology. Cosmetic laser courses typically include classroom discussions as well as hands-on laser education for students to develop the confidence and skills to perform aesthetic treatments on a variety of clients.

The National Laser Institute offers laser education courses where students will learn how to treat unwanted hair, as well as other aesthetic techniques to deliver safe and effective treatments to clients.

Each course begins with classroom discussions about the industry and what to expect once you start working as a cosmetic laser technician. Didactic theory will consist of topics like:

  • The basics of laser biophysics and mechanics.
  • How light-based devices interact with skin tissue.
  • Different types of light-based devices and how they interact with the skin.
  • Patient selection criteria.
  • Possible side effects and how to manage them.

Medical aesthetics training also includes hands-on training in an educational spa environment. Here, you will watch comprehensive demonstrations and treat real clients in order to get a taste for working in the industry!
