Can Botox Improve The Appearance of Facial Scars?

Can Botox Improve Facial Scars

If you think of Botox as a mere wrinkle-smoother for younger-looking skin, think again.

While only FDA-approved for a few uses on the face, Botox has a wide range of off-label uses – both medical and aesthetic.

Now, physicians say it might even help stop facial scars from forming after plastic surgery.

According to a new study, this cosmetic injectable has the potential to change the way medical professionals treat scars.

Find out how Botox and the medical aesthetics industry can help improve the appearance of facial scars!

Can Botox Improve Facial Scars?

This month, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery published a study that looked at the effects of botulinum toxin injections on improving facial wounds and scars.

Physicians studied 16 patients who underwent facial plastic surgery to alter a disfiguring birthmark. Immediately following surgery, physicians injected half of the incision with Botox while the other side was injected with a saline solution as a placebo.

Four months later, the patients attended follow-up appointments with independent plastic surgeons. They evaluated each side of the scar and rated its appearance on a scale of zero to 10. On average, surgeons rated the half treated with Botox higher than the side that had not received the injections.

The study found Botox injections improved the appearance of facial surgical scars by reducing the bumpiness and the width of each scar. As it turns out, Botox relieves tension on the scar that results from everyday muscle movements and facial expressions so that the scar can heal better. Surgeons have been using it this way for a long time.

How does Botox improve facial scars? After a surgeon stitches up an incision after surgery, they inject Botox around the scar, similarly to the way Botox is injected to treat wrinkles.

Botulinum toxin type A is widely used for the treatment of facial lines and wrinkles. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Botox is the most popular medical aesthetics procedure, with over 7 million treatments performed in 2017. In recent years, Botox has also been used to treat a wide range of non-cosmetic concerns as well.
