Kybella Training Provides Nonsurgical Chin Fat Reduction That Works

The familiar saying, “Everything old is new again” may be true for clothing trends, fashionable restaurants and man buns, but it definitely doesn’t apply to today’s medical aesthetics technology and procedures. This is an industry where there’s no going backwards, thanks to significant advances in cosmetic lasers and injectables such as Botox and dermal fillers.

And while humankind is still working diligently on the cure for the common cold, there’s groundbreaking news for another age-old concern: the dreaded double chin. Did you know that thousands of people would love to get rid of their double chins? In fact, according to a 2014 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, nearly as many consumers are bothered by their double chin (68%) as by lines and wrinkles around the eyes (71%). But here’s the rub: until recently, double chins could only be treated successfully by liposuction and in most cases, additional surgical skin tightening.

Don’t get us wrong—there are still plenty of people willing to undergo the knife. In 2014 alone, there were more than 211,000 liposuction procedures, 18,000 chin augmentations and 55,000 neck lifts. But not everyone can or will accept the costs, risks and downtime associated with plastic surgery. That’s why nonsurgical fat reduction procedures have increased by an incredible 42% since 2014, and why a new chin fat-melting injection, called KYBELLA, is quickly gaining wild popularity. Clients can’t sign up fast enough for KYBELLA, and KYBELLA training for medical professionals is already in high demand. Let’s take a closer look at this latest miracle treatment, one that many experts are calling “the next Botox.”

What’s the Big Deal About a Double Chin, Anyway?

Basically, submental fullness (aka a double chin) can make people look heavier and older than they really are. This condition can be influenced by multiple factors like aging, weight and genetics and no matter how much diet or exercise is involved, double chins may not go away.

Anyone can get a double and/or sagging chin, regardless of age, weight or fitness level. Sometimes significant weight gain or loss plays a role but even people who have always been thin can have a double chin.

What Were the Options Before KYBELLA?

There were several options for double chins before KYBELLA, most of them surgical, including liposuction. Although traditional liposuction removes unwanted fat, its capabilities are somewhat limited. Fat removal isn’t very precise and it doesn’t address lax skin tone—in fact, loose skin may even be worse following surgical fat removal.

As a result, laser-assisted liposuction was invented (Laser/Smart Lipo). This type of liposuction is especially good for smaller body parts such as chin, upper arms, etc. but it, too, involves risk and the fact that it’s invasive, expensive and requires recovery time means it’s not right for everyone.

Lipodissolve is a term coined to describe the injection of materials into fat to try to reduce localized collections of fat. But many dermatologists and plastic surgeons worry about the long-term outcome of Lipodissolve and while the concept remains popular, results tend to be inconsistent and discouraging.

Mesotherapy refers to multiple injections of tiny amounts of a particular substance (or combination of agents, often a “cocktail” of medications used to treat asthma and high blood pressure, along with vitamins and supplements) within the skin to achieve a specific purpose. It’s most commonly associated with the use of injectables to shrink unwanted fat deposits, such as those under the chin, love handle areas, sides of knees and around the bra straps. But mesotherapy also has a downside. There is uncertainty regarding long-term usage, a lack of ingredient standardization and one ingredient, a supplement called phosphatidylcholine, has not been FDA-approved for injection and side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, depression and arrhythmias.

What Exactly is KYBELLA and How Does It Work?

KYBELLA is a non-human/non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into subcutaneous fat, KYBELLA causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.

What Makes KYBELLA such a Revolutionary Product?

KYBELLA offers the best-of-the-best in non-surgical chin fat reduction, in large part because it is non-surgical/minimally invasive, dissolves fat in the stubborn, under chin area and it firms and tones the skin and jaw line. Even better? Results are long-lasting, and may even be permanent.

Is KYBELLA Right for Everyone?

While KYBELLA is suitable for many different types of clients, not all double chins are considered equal. Submental fullness and fat distribution ranges from absent to extreme and while all double chins are annoying to their owners (just ask them!) KYBELLA is the first and only FDA-approved injectable drug to treat moderate to severe submental fullness.

KYBELLA might not be right for any client with prominent platysmal bands or excessive skin laxity, any client with submental fullness caused by thyroid issues or lymphadenopathy or any client who has had prior surgical or aesthetic treatments in the submental area. An in-depth consultation on KYBELLA with a licensed medical provider is always highly recommended before treatment.

How About Number of Treatments and Side Effects?

While some clients experience noticeable results in just one treatment session, most gain appreciable results in 2-4 treatments. Most treatments can be administered in just 15-20 minutes and as an added bonus, KYBELLA can be an excellent complimentary treatment to other cosmetic injectables such as Botox and dermal fillers. Clients should plan to return for their next KYBELLA treatment in no less than one month. At that time, results may be assessed and a future treatment plan may be scheduled.

Side effects are minimal, and most adverse reactions are primarily associated with the treatment area. The most commonly reported reactions include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and hardening in treatment area, which typically dissipates over time.

The Million Dollar Question: Does KYBELLA Work?

Yes! In fact, more than 20 studies with thousands of patients have shown that up to 79% percent noted both physical and emotional improvement after treatment.

And while KYBELLA is not yet FDA-approved for any area other than the submental area, stay tuned. This amazing product will likely soon be used in other areas as well.

If I’m a Medical Practitioner, Can KYBELLA Increase My Revenue Stream?

Yes! Each treatment, including marking off the treatment area, takes only about 15-20 minutes and the suggested retail price for each treatment is $1,200 with 2-4 treatments typically recommended.

Summary

Without a doubt, KYBELLA is one of the most exciting, breakthrough treatments since Botox. In regulatory filings, its manufacturer said it thinks the injection could top $500 million in annual sales and that, “Many patients who undergo [Botox and filler] treatments would also be willing to have a KYBELLA injection to eliminate fat under their chins.”

National Laser Institute is proud to offer a 1-day training course in KYBELLA for nurses and doctors.
