How to Make Smart Equipment-Purchasing Decisions After Laser Training

How to Make Smart Laser Equipment DecisionsIf you are thinking of opening your own medical spa, here’s how to make smart equipment-buying decisions once you complete a cosmetic laser course.

Step 1: Decide on your next new service

The first step in this process is deciding the type of service you think would be good to offer. For example, if you already offer laser-based treatments like laser hair removal and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), you might want to consider adding a treatment like laser tattoo removal or non-surgical body contouring (CoolSculpting).

You will want to contact two or three reps from different laser companies and ask to set up a meeting. During these meetings, it’s important to ask questions like:

  • The cost of the equipment.
  • The cost of consumables.
  • What type of warranty is included.
  • The recommended price to the patient, and the number of treatments needed.

Step 2: Get input on client interests

Next, try to get a feel for what the interest is in the new medical aesthetic service. You might ask clients to take a survey or ask them for their thoughts during a conversation. Additionally, you can research how many Google searches were done in your area for the service you are thinking to add. This will give you a better idea of demand in your area.

Step 3: Do the math

After you have done your research and have decided there is an interest in this particular cosmetic treatment, do the math. Figure out how many treatments it will take for you to break even. Also factor in any discounts. If the equipment can pay for itself in two years or less, that is a good investment.

Step 4: Plan a launch

Now it’s time to plan a launch for your new equipment! Choose a date several weeks after the equipment is delivered so that your staff has enough time to train and get some practice in. Perhaps you invite friends and family to be models to practice the new medical aesthetic treatment on.

Also, you may want to make this new treatment a special for an entire month to get clients talking about it. You could also send out e-blasts and network to generate business.
