Is Aesthetic School So Last Year?

kThose who are interested in the field of cosmetic skin care might be eager to attend esthetic school in order to start working in the field. But with the demand of recent cosmetic laser technology, is esthetic school so last year?

Estheticians are those who specialize in surface-level skincare. This can range anywhere from mud masks, facials, peels, wraps, tweezing, waxing and much more. In esthetic school, you learn how to treat different skin types with a wide arrange of products and skincare treatments. But in the last decade, skin care technology has become more advanced. And because people are attracted to the newer, greater things, cosmetic laser treatments have become highly in-demand.

Could laser technicians be the next great thing in skin care? Laser technicians are trained to work on both the dermal and epidermal layers, which means they can perform advanced skin care treatments. These can include anything from laser hair reduction, photofacial skin rejuvenation, laser tattoo removal, laser wrinkle reduction, laser cellulite removal, and much more!

Last year, there were over 1 MILLION laser hair reduction treatments performed in the U.S. alone, according to the ASAPS. It’s a treatment that’s been on the rise for the last five years, as well as many other laser skin rejuvenation treatments. Statistics don’t lie: cosmetic laser skin care treatments are in.

That’s not to say that esthetic school is out. People still enjoy facials, waxing, and peels, but there is a demand for faster treatments and faster results, and cosmetic laser technology is capable of meeting that demand.

For instance, you can perform laser hair reduction on underarms or the upper lip in just 15 minutes, and a facial area of photofacial skin rejuvenation typically takes between 15-20. The price points of these treatments can be anywhere from $150-200 per treatment, which means you’re capable of treating more clients in a day and earning a larger income.

Many people interested in skincare often ask us if they can do both esthetic and cosmetic laser skin care, and the answer in most cases is yes! It does depend on your state regulations, but typically laser technician training takes two weeks and esthetic school may take 6 – 12 months.

We also tell people who aren’t currently estheticians to enroll in a laser training course before esthetic school. Not only is the training faster, but the information you learn overlaps with the information presented to you in esthetic school. Also, since you’ll have your laser training before you enroll in esthetic school, you’ll be able to seek out laser technician jobs while you’re completing esthetician training. In the end, having both skillsets equals more clients to treat, which equals more income!
