When married couple and doctors Jean and Allastair Carruthers accidentally discovered cosmetic properties in a toxin generally used for ophthalmologists they had no idea that their discovery would change the face of the beauty industry forever. The brilliant pair knew that they were onto something big, but never could have imagined the aftershock of what they had found. Never in a million years, could they have predicted the involvement of Botox learning and the education that would follow. At the time in the late 80s, the inquisitive doctors would have been truly shocked to learn that their finding would lead to an eventual multi-billion-dollar industry.
It’s fair to say that 1987 was a big year for the Canadian Carruthers doctors.
Jean, the ophthalmologist in the family, stumbled across a most interesting use for botulinum toxin. According to a Reader’s Digest article and other recountings, Jean was using the toxin on a routine treatment for eyes spasms one day. Once injected into the skin, the botulinum toxin resulted in paralyzing the spasming muscles, thereby ceasing the twitching. A particularly wily patient afflicted with such spasms grew frustrated during one such session when the doctor refused to inject the toxin into her forehead. When Dr. Carruthers noted that the patient’s forehead didn’t need the injection as it was spasm-free, the patient pouted and noted that when she did get the injections as part of her treatments, her wrinkles would “go away.”
Intrigued, the doctor discussed the interesting conversation with her dermatologist husband that night.
Out of that injection session and a couple of bowls of spaghetti, an idea was born between the doctors’ brilliant minds. With their receptionist as their willing guinea pig, the pair began testing botulin toxin as a cosmetic injector.
Low and behold, they had discovered and developed Botox injections.
Soon thereafter, they continued clinical trials and began spreading word with disbelieving colleagues. However, it wasn’t until 1993 that their idea and methods truly gained much clout in the field of medicine. Then, when others realized the legitimacy and implications of their discovery, it caught FIRE!
And that is how the Carruthers made history and Botox learning possible!
It has been more than 30 years since the Carruthers discovered the alternate, cosmetic use for botulinum toxin and the breakthrough and resulting technology continues to take the world by storm.
A modern market from an 80s finding:
Botulinum toxin and its vast array of uses have come a long way from Dr. Jean Carruthers ophthalmology office. The once small-scale operation has turned into a churning, global market that is growing exponentially with each passing year.
In fact, according to Grand View Research, the global botulinum toxin market is projected to reach a value of USD 7.3 billion by 2025!
Undoubtedly, Botox is among the most popular cosmetic injectable in the world today. An estimated 11 million people around the world have used it for a variety of reasons (most of them being cosmetic).
