The Life of a Laser Hair Reduction Technician
Laser hair reduction technicians are those who are capable of safely and effectively removing unwanted hair from almost any part of your body. Not only that, but most laser hair reduction technicians are also skilled in other areas of cosmetic laser technology, including IPL photofacial skin rejuvenation, radiofrequency skin tightening, and more.
Tara has spent over a decade in the aesthetics business and works as a cosmetic laser technician. She explains why she was so attracted to the cosmetic laser industry and where she sees the future of this market.
“I was doing a lot of peels, a lot of microdermabrasion, but there are only so many chemical peels you can do,” Tara says. “It wasn’t pulling out the sun damage as much as I wanted it too and I knew there were better options.”
As technology has advanced, so has the medical aesthetics industry. Clients now prefer to permanently rid unwanted hair instead of waxing. Although chemical peels work wonders, photofacials are now used to permanently rid sun damage, rosacea, age spots, and more.
“I was a little scared at first,” Tara says when asked about diving into this new market. “I wasn’t sure about making the change, and I knew a lot of people were starting to get interested in it. But I just kind of put both feet in and jumped in.”
Make More Money with Cosmetic Lasers
How does Tara make more money? She gives us an example. She would charge $15 for eyebrow waxing, which took 15 minutes for her to perform on a client. Now that she is trained to perform IPL photofacials, she can spend those 15 minutes treating a client who is willing to spend $500 on the market price for this skin rejuvenation treatment.
But are clients paying that price? Absolutely. Not only is that the standard rate, but with IPL photofacials clients see permanent results and gain flawless skin.
“After I began booking laser services, my booking went through the roof. I started booking people like crazy. I was getting calls about it all the time. And my existing clients were so pleased,” Tara explains. “My income almost quadrupled.”
Laser Training and Certification
Of course, you need to have the proper training and certification to become a laser technician. Tara attended both a laser manufacturer’s session as well as National Laser Institute and sheds light on the difference.
“Going to National Laser–that’s where I felt like I knew what I was doing. Because back in the day where there wasn’t training schools it was kind of scary. You’d read a book and take a couple classes and [the laser manufacturers] would kind of send you on your way,” she tells us. “But coming to National Laser Institute for two weeks of training versus a few hours…you are learning so much information. You’re learning the Fitzpatrick scale inside and out. You know tissue interaction. You learn about physics and the skin and you feel like you can safely go out into the world and start working.”
In most states, you do not have to be an aesthetician or have attended aesthetician school to become a laser technician. In fact, it’s a great industry for those who are passionate about beauty and enjoy the anti-aging industry.

Laser Safety
Tara’s advice? “You have to obviously be educated and know what you’re doing. There’s less risks,” she says. “The hands-on training at National Laser Institute is absolutely great. Even going through aesthetics school, I didn’t get nearly enough hands-on.”
National Laser Institute is the leading cosmetic laser training school in the nation with over a decade of excellence. The comprehensive two-week training course is ideal for those interested in becoming cosmetic laser technicians. (You can learn more by filling out the form on your right).
“This is what everybody wants. I don’t have one client that walks through my door that doesn’t ask me about laser hair reduction or photofacials. It’s everywhere.”
